This was an interesting one, the client was a fabulous mix of financial advisor, artist and long distance cyclist! When he and his wife called in here with two rather weather beaten up lumps of yew asking for a pair of puritanical upright Welsh farmhouse chairs, I was distinctly underwhelmed.
Two things then happened, firstly I had the yew boarded up having removed three very large nails, and revealed some amazing timber. Secondly the client realised he hadn't inspired me and totally changed the brief. He now wanted 'one big comfortable outragous armchair'. He was very aware of good posture and back problems and specified good lumbar support, so much so that he came down for a fitting when the chair was up to calico stage so that it could be adjusted before the aubergine leather was fitted.
The arms and feet were made out of Purple Heart to match the purple streaks that were present in the yew due to the iron in the rusty nails. The emphasis was very much on comfort and sumptuousness; the colour is quite incredible.
